GlusterFS is a designed for general purpose scalable NAS workload. Goals are - massive scalability, parallelism and open standards hardware. We are working towards ease-of-use, and management/monitoring framework. We are adding a series of optimizations for virtualized/cloud computing environment in our upcoming releases. In terms of databases, we have not officially certified for any database implementations yet. SAN is a network block device. If you need dedicated (exclusive) block access to your storage, then SAN is your choice.
