Good afternoon, We're running into some pretty severe performance issues with gluster when we're using io-cache on the server side. We're just doing some basic performance measuring between one server and one client. Here's our setup: client: #################################### volume client type protocol/client option transport-type tcp option remote-host server option remote-subvolume io-cache end-volume #################################### server: #################################### volume posix type storage/posix option directory /tmp/gluster end-volume volume posix-locks type features/locks subvolumes posix end-volume volume io-cache type performance/io-cache option cache-size 8GB subvolumes posix-locks end-volume volume server type protocol/server subvolumes io-cache option transport-type tcp option auth.addr.io-cache.allow * end-volume #################################### We're just testing streaming a 4gb file full of /dev/random through gluster with a "cat /mnt/glusterfs/giant-4gb | pv > /dev/null". The two machines are completely idle. On the client side, the copy starts out fine at about 112 MB/s, but once we hit about 1.75gb transfered the performance plummets: 110MB 0:00:01 [ 110MB/s] 223MB 0:00:02 [ 113MB/s] 336MB 0:00:03 [ constant for a couple seconds, but then rises until it maxes out at 100%. When it hits 100% the transfer speed plummets: PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND 11975 root 17 0 31336 1916 804 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 glusterfsd 11975 root 17 0 31336 1916 804 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 glusterfsd 11975 root 17 0 31336 1916 804 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 glusterfsd 11975 root 17 0 31336 1916 804 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 glusterfsd 11975 root 17 0 31336 1916 804 S 0 0.0 0:00.00 glusterfsd 11975 root 16 0 105m 77m 888 R 20 0.5 0:00.20 glusterfsd 11975 root 15 0 222m 193m 888 S 29 1.2 0:00.49 glusterfsd 11975 root 15 0 339m 310m 888 S 34 1.9 0:00.83 glusterfsd 11975 root 15 0 456m 427m 888 R 27 2.7 0:01.10 glusterfsd 11975 root 15 0 572m 544m 888 S 36 3.4 0:01.46 glusterfsd 11975 root 15 0 688m 659m 888 S 44 4.1 0:01.90 glusterfsd 11975 root 15 0 804m 776m 888 S 48 4.9 0:02.38 glusterfsd 11975 root 15 0 921m 893m 888 S 45 5.6 0:02.83 glusterfsd 11975 root 15 0 1035m 1.0g 888 S 52 6.3 0:03.35 glusterfsd 11975 root 15 0 1150m 1.1g 888 S 53 7.0 0:03.88 glusterfsd 11975 root 16 0 1263m 1.2g 888 R 61 7.7 0:04.49 glusterfsd 11975 root 15 0 1371m 1.3g 888 S 65 8.4 0:05.14 glusterfsd 11975 root 15 0 1474m 1.4g 888 S 73 9.1 0:05.87 glusterfsd 11975 root 15 0 1573m 1.5g 888 S 79 9.7 0:06.66 glusterfsd 11975 root 15 0 1666m 1.6g 888 S 84 10.3 0:07.50 glusterfsd 11975 root 16 0 1755m 1.7g 888 R 90 10.8 0:08.40 glusterfsd 11975 root 16 0 1839m 1.8g 888 R 94 11.3 0:09.34 glusterfsd 11975 root 17 0 1919m 1.8g 888 R 98 11.9 0:10.32 glusterfsd 11975 root 19 0 1994m 1.9g 888 R 100 12.3 0:11.32 glusterfsd 11975 root 21 0 2063m 2.0g 888 R 100 12.7 0:12.32 glusterfsd 11975 root 25 0 2125m 2.0g 888 R 101 13.1 0:13.33 glusterfsd 11975 root 25 0 2184m 2.1g 888 R 99 13.5 0:14.32 glusterfsd 11975 root 25 0 2238m 2.2g 888 R 100 13.9 0:15.32 glusterfsd 11975 root 25 0 2290m 2.2g 888 R 100 14.2 0:16.32 glusterfsd 11975 root 25 0 2340m 2.3g 888 R 100 14.5 0:17.32 glusterfsd 11975 root 25 0 2386m 2.3g 888 R 100 14.8 0:18.32 glusterfsd 11975 root 25 0 2431m 2.3g 888 R 101 15.1 0:19.33 glusterfsd 11975 root 25 0 2473m 2.4g 888 R 99 15.3 0:20.32 glusterfsd 11975 root 25 0 2514m 2.4g 888 R 101 15.6 0:21.33 glusterfsd ... This is repeatable. With the same glusterfs and glusterfsd (that has it's cache now full with the 4.1gb file), the pattern is exactly the same. The copy maxes out at 112 MB/s for a couple seconds, but once around 1.5gb has been copied the glusterfsd cpu spikes to 100% and the transfer speed plummets. In comparison, when I disable the cache (and just let the kernel manage the file caching), with these files: client: ############################# volume client type protocol/client option transport-type tcp option remote-host server option remote-subvolume posix-locks end-volume ############################# server: ############################# volume posix type storage/posix option directory /tmp/gluster end-volume volume posix-locks type features/locks subvolumes posix end-volume volume server type protocol/server subvolumes posix-locks option transport-type tcp option auth.addr.posix-locks.allow * end-volume ############################### The transfer stays at 112 MB/s the entire copy, and glusterfsd cpu usage doesn't go above 30%. Does anyone know what's going on?
