Dear developers, When the export directory does not exist GlusterFS tries to create it and (if successfull) it will continue as if everything is OK. The only reason to do this that I can think of, is to convenience a user who's setting up a new system. But typically if the export directory does not exist, this either points to a misconfiguration or, more likely, that the volume is not available (bad disk, raid offline etc).
