If your guess is wrong then so is mine.  I went through all of the other
code and managed to convince myself it was (basically) OK, so I was
beginning to suspect clear-locks too.  That's why I want to change the
test scripts so we can identify which tests produce cores.

I concur with this suggestion.  Disabling two tests is very easy, and
knowing whether that makes the problem go away will be useful.
