Here is layout dump just after the message:

[2012-08-19 19:45:48.868043] I [dht-layout.c:595:dht_layout_normalize]
  1-vndfs-dht: found anomalies in /. holes=1 overlaps=0
[2012-08-19 19:45:48.868132] I [dht-layout.c:598:dht_layout_normalize]
  1-vndfs-dht: layout->list[0] = { start = 0x0, stop = 0x0, err = -1 }
[2012-08-19 19:45:48.868211] I [dht-layout.c:598:dht_layout_normalize]
  1-vndfs-dht: layout->list[1] = { start = 0x0, stop = 0x0, err = -1 }
[2012-08-19 19:45:48.868288] I [dht-layout.c:598:dht_layout_normalize]
  1-vndfs-dht: layout->list[2] = { start = 0x0, stop = 0x7ffffffe,
  err = 0 }

And DHT was indeed loaded. At the beginning I had this:
 15: volume vndfs-dht
 16:     type cluster/distribute
 17:     subvolumes vndfs-client-0 vndfs-client-1
 18: end-volume

And after I added the new brick:
 22: volume vndfs-dht
 23:     type cluster/distribute
 24:     subvolumes vndfs-client-0 vndfs-client-1 vndfs-client-2
 25: end-volume
