Thanks Avati, Yes, when I said that I hadn't use "configure" I meant "autotools" (though I didn't know it :) I think almost every project I download and build from scratch uses configure .. the last time I looked at the autotools was a few years ago now, maybe its time for a re-look .. my libraries are getting big enough to warrant it I suppose.
