This could be related to the (rather worrying) update I just posted for

Cursory investigation reveals that the directory was in fact created.
Removing it works fine, as does re-creating it, so the error seems very
intermittent.
Unfortunately, again, no logs are available since it is a root file system.
This is with gluster 2.0.4 / fuse 2.7.4glfs11.
