Hardware Architecture Question

If you are serving up lets say IMAP Directories and Websites from GlusterFS, is it more beneficial to have many smaller 1U servers with big drives and perhaps a replica count of 3 or 3 large storage boxes? Does GlusterFS benefit from this approach at all?

Also what are considerations for CPU/RAM? Is there a threshold on RAM/CPU where obviously another brick is in order rather than upgrading hardware?

I apologize for the naivety, just getting familiar with GlusterFS and how it utilizes resources.

Thanks,

John
