If I'm not completely wrong, Debian etch came with fuse 2.5.3
(otherwise I wouldn't have had to build 2.6.3).
Sarge had 2.2.1, and sid (unstable branch) seems to have 2.6.3.

P.S.: It's pretty straightforward to build 2.6.3 from the sources;
you might also succeed to build from the Debian sid source package
(provided the dependencies have not changed too much)
