git-gui doesn't display over ssh, gitk is ok

git-gui displays nothing when running it over ssh -X.  gitk 
works fine, so this doesn't seem to be a problem with X-Windows
or my ssh setup (other X apps are fine, too). I'm running 
1.5.5.rc0 now, but this has been true since I began using git.

The only thing google gave me was something about running 
git-fetch from git-gui in msysGit, which I am not using.

Seen this before?
Any ideas?
