All the way back to 10.0 you have -[NSString fileSystemRepresentation], which does the same thing but that's Objective-C. I wouldn't be surprised if that's just a wrapper for the CF functions; that's often the way it is on Mac OS X. And often, the CF functions *are* present on older systems, but they're just not declared in public headers. I wouldn't actually recommend using a private SPI, but they are often there.
