Don't you rather mean
ln -s "mate -w" mate_wait
?
No, 'mate' actually checks the name of it's executable - if it's got
a _wait suffix, it adds the -w option. Slightly odd behaviour, but
it was presumably designed to get around exactly this sort of problem
