"Metadata" here is used for the raw commit metadata which gets included in a patch when using 'git format-patch --complete'. The new email format is roughly: 1. email headers (ends with a blank line) 2. changelog (ends with "---" or when the diff starts) 3. comments (optional; ends when the diff starts) 4. diff itself (ends when there are no more files/hunks) 5. metadata (optional; starts with "--" and then "commit [...]") 6. signature (optional; starts with "--") Traditionally, the comments and signature were counted as part of the diff, and although the metadata now appears between the diff and the signature (and is extracted into its own file) the signature is also output together with the diff; this breaks no existing test cases and seems to be the most backwards compatible.
