I ran strace this morning and saw
openat(AT_FDCWD, "/tmp/x/repo/.git/refs/worktr",
O_RDONLY|O_NONBLOCK|O_CLOEXEC|O_DIRECTORY) = -1 ENOENT (No such file or
directory)
