Ideally, the first patch series would be ready to submit very soon into the project, something like 2 weeks (which is another point in favor of the helper approach outlined by Stefan). The smaller the patch series are, the more likely they will get in quickly. Not only that. Reviewers' time is scarce. I frequently have to triage which mails I can read in the time I have for the mailing list. If I see a patch series that is too large, I simply cannot review it.
