In that case what might be nice would be if it printed a revision
specification that could be handed to git-log or gitk for the user to
inspect the situation.

And extra nice if it looked like b1189118..ba531642 when possible.

Right. I wasn't sure about when it is expected to come online. That's
why I suggested the message above. It would be a very easy way to
allow "git checkout" to work in the no-commits-to-lose case, but would
still give the user the name of the commit she is leaving behind in
case she wants to get back to it.
