This series is a possible replacement for Peff's "[PATCH 2/4] add a stat_validity struct" that doesn't misuse the cache_entry too much in the implementation of the new functions. It is only interesting in the context of Peff's series (or something like it), or if there are other places where somebody wants to be able to tell whether a file has changed since it was last checked.
