Armed with that knowledge, I think Sitaram may have something like
this:
[remote "htmldocs"]
url = git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/git/git-htmldocs.git/
fetch = +refs/heads/master:refs/heads/html
and does
git fetch htmldocs
git checkout html
