Thanks, but I don't need to fix the repository since a clean clone
works, I just wanted to report it so that git can be fixed, if
possible.

I ran 'git pull -f' and it gave me this:

Now further 'git pull's also display "Fetch failure:
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/git/git.git".  It no longer mentions
the 'pu' branch, though.
