It definitely works here with it. This is on Mac OS X 10.4.8 (Intel) with default GCC 4.0.1 from Developer Tools. Which version are you using? Does it work if you change from testing __APPLE_CC__ to just __APPLE__? That also works here, and is probably better anyway.
