Yeah, I wouldn't recommend doing that.  Either

	path = strbuf_detach(&sb, NULL);
	retval = xstrdup(cleanup_path(path));
        free(path);
        return retval;

or

	path = xstrdup(cleanup_path(sb.buf));
        strbuf_release(&sb);
        return path;
	
would be more sensible.
