Thanks for digging out an old document.  The analysis of the
problem and the solution described there are still correct
(modulo bad English).

I forgot to update the document at the end ("I think we
should...") when we did remove the workaround for runtime
penalty, in:

    Remove the "delay writing to avoid runtime penalty of racy-git avoidance"
    
    The work-around should not be needed.  Even if it turns out we
    would want it later, git will remember the patch for us ;-).
