git-am calls git-mailsplit and git-mailinfo, and those two tools will do
most of the work (basically everything except the actual committing) for
you, I use them in cg-patch -m and it should be fairly trivial to make a
stg command reusing those too.

Yes, indeed, these are the commands I would use. I wouldn't go further
in calling git-am or git-applymbox directly as I try not to use too
many of the porcelain'ish git scripts.
