I had no idea what I was using, so I downloaded new setup.exe from cygwin.com, 
selected a different mirror (just in case), and it works. It looks like my 
version was simply incomplete and the problem was not related to git at all. I 
have no clue how it came, but it seems to be a problem with cygwin or with the 
mirror I was using before. Actually, I should have tried it without having to 
ask first, but thank you.
