Ouch, you must be using a really ancient version of Fedora.  Fedora 11
is the oldest release currently supported and it contains 1.6.2.5.
1.7.1 is in updates-testing for both Fedora 12 and 13.

Perhaps it's also worth mentioning for the archives that the fedora
packages are designed to cleanly build in mock¹ for RHEL/CentOS >= 4 as
well as previous Fedora releases.

¹ mock is fedora's main build tool, usable with little to no
  configuration on RHEL/CentOS/Fedora systems.
