Not that it's much newer, but if you use the EPEL repository, 1.5.5.6
is available.

And if it helps, the Fedora package is intended to be able to build
cleanly on CentOS as well -- though it depends on some macro settings
available in the buildsys-macros package found at:

    http://buildsys.fedoraproject.org/buildgroups/rhel5/

...in the proper directory for your architecture.
