XDG_DATA_DIRS is used to find this. So, i think what matters is having
XDG_DATA_DIRS set, but also the order of the entries within it when it
is set. You need $prefix first i think.

Thanks! So for current (as of last week) Debian Sid and current babl/GEGL/GIMP-2.99 (as of this morning), XDG_DATA_DIRS really does need to be set.

But for Debian Testing, it seems XDG_DATA_DIRS shouldn't be set. I wonder what has changed between Debian Testing and Sid.

Anyone know what an XDG_DATA_DIRS actually is? Also, what is this "gir" thing that GEGL was looking for?
