We should call it GNUIMP (pronounced New-Imp). "GIMP" is just crushing recursive acronyms together ;) Seriously though, the fact that it's not commercial software is likely to be more of an issue than the name. "Google" is about the worst name I can think of for anything adults would use, yet it's used everywhere, by nearly everyone so the name itself is not going to inhibit widespread adoption. GIMP is one of the most popular Open Source software applications available to date. People who say it's not popular or will never be (for any reason) simply aren't paying attention.
