As someone who's been using Gimp for coming up on 17 years, I have always thought of .xcf as the Gimp project file format. I only ever save in xcf when I want to save .... my project. It's not useful for anything else. Especially seeing as how ~ only the Gimp uses it. I reiterate that IMHBCO gg hit the nail squarely on the head.
