I added a very simple thing like this to my image processing app. a
couple of years ago. I have about 350 menu items :-( so it really
helps finding things (I use it myself sometimes).

You can see it on the RHS of this screenshot:

The localised descriptions of the menu items are displayed in a list.
As you type in the search box, the list expands and contracts showing
matching items. Double-clicking on an item activates that menu action.
There's a tickbox in the View menu which shows and hides the browser
(with a little animation), or you can drag on the pane handle.

As well as the localised description, if you scroll to the right it
also displays the path to the menu item, the action arguments and the
keyboard shortcut (if any).
