I added a very simple thing like this to my image processing app. a couple of years ago. I have about 350 menu items :-( so it really helps finding things (I use it myself sometimes). You can see it on the RHS of this screenshot: http://www.vips.ecs.soton.ac.uk/images/Screenshot-nip2-7.10.10.png The localised descriptions of the menu items are displayed in a list. As you type in the search box, the list expands and contracts showing matching items. Double-clicking on an item activates that menu action. There's a tickbox in the View menu which shows and hides the browser (with a little animation), or you can drag on the pane handle.
