Others have suggested similar things in the past, in the line of having the GIMP running in its own window. For some reason, GIMP developers did not like it. It is explained in the link you provide. Please read through the list archives to find these suggestions; maybe you can come up with a way to convince GIMP developers, since a lot of users have the same feeling as you do.
