When you open an image that uses a different colorspace from the standard one, you should get a dialog that asks whether you want to (1) convert to Gimp's working space, or (2) use the RGB values without conversion. If you convert, then you should be asked to choose a conversion intent. Nothing should happen without the user's knowledge. For users who don't want to deal with these things, it may be useful to have a preference which, if enabled, turns off colorspace conversions and all queries related to them.
