It's not a show-stopper, but it > certainly has been leaving me baffled. This sounds very much like a hardware problem. Unsufficient cooling or corrupted memory could be the cause. It's not too unlikely that such problems only show up when compiling a large software package such as The GIMP. You could do some tests compiling other software such as the kernel or XFree86. Sven
