To me this sounds quite complicated and it will certainly introduce a
couple of problems like for example
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=120912

Since you failed to describe a usage scenario so far, I don't see how
this change would improve the user experience. So far I can only see
how it makes both the code and the user interface more complex.
