[Gimp-developer] finding time of layer's last modification

I've written a plugin and at one point in it stores image file copies of 
each layer.
I don't want to (re)write files if the layer hasn't changed since the 
files modification date. (think make)

I'm trying to do this with perl-fu, possible?
