Hi Frank - I just downloaded lic2-0.55 and began testing. There's still one problem: it doesn't undo if you work on an image in place. But you'll be pleased to know that the Makefile works out of the box on my system (RH 6.1, mostly). Still, it's a great improvement over 0.50.
