My guess is that for some reason the Perl <-> script-fu interface is getting the image type munged (or not properly set) in some cases, especially since the script-fu's in question don't have trouble interactively. It could be that gauss_rle is the only thing I've run into which explicitly checks type (but that would seem a bit odd). I'll look at it deeper when I'm back in town on Sunday night.
