XPM is an indexed file format that happens to supports very large palettes,
so you can save any RGB image as XPM. It is impossible to know whether an
XPM image was saved as an RGB image or an indexed one (or even greyscale),
but a reasonable loader might load it as indexed if the number of colours
is small enough.

Right now XPMs always load as RGBA images, but I don't think this is
a big deal.
