Here is another version:

  You can save a selection to a channel (Select->Save to Channel) and
  then modify this channel with any paint tools.  Using the buttons in
  the "Channels" tab of the "Layers, Channels and Paths" dialog, you can
  toggle the visibility of this new channel or convert it to a selection.

I think that it is important to mention how to toggle the visibility
of the channel masks, because the channels that are created with
Select->Save to Channel are not visible by default.  This can be a
good thing for experienced users, but confusing for new users.  This
is even more confusing because the new channel becomes automatically
active, and you cannot draw in the image anymore.

By the way, I wrote "Using the buttons..." but this assumes that the
user understands that the eye icons are buttons, even when they are
not there (not visible).  If someone can provide a better wording that
fits in 4 lines or less, please tell me...
