Since you do not add the Alpha Channel to the image, but to a layer,
the <Image>/Image/Alpha/Add Alpha Channel menu is completely misguiding.

Add Alpha Channel should be in the Layers menu and, oh, there is
Flatten in there too. Surprise, surprise ;-)
