Why are they not referenced anymore? I think this happened when someone started updating the layer modes documentation several years ago (which is still very incomplete). The "new" layer modes have different effects, meaning the examples need to be replaced. However, I think we also should have documentation for the legacy layer modes, which is where these images possibly can be used. If I remember correctly this is why I didn't remove these images. Note that there are also many orphaned "translated" images.
