If you do decide to build the compiler from source rather than use one of those binary installers, it's much easier to download a release tarball, rather than check out the sources from version control, see https://gcc.gnu.org/install/download.html (and the other pages under https://gcc.gnu.org/install/ too). https://gcc.gnu.org/wiki/InstallingGCC is also helpful, but installing a binary package is the simplest solution.
