Later versions *should* work, but if they don't the answer is to use
the recommended versions, which is what the docs suggest and what
happens if you use contrib/download_prerequisites, as recommended by
http://gcc.gnu.org/wiki/InstallingGCC

That's http://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=50461 - the fix is
on the trunk but hasn't been applied to the 4.7 branch
