I did not want to stray to far from the original version that the
rather dated OS running on the beast is using.

To put it another way ... How recent of a binutils do you think I
could run on such an old OS? 2.16.1 works with both NetBSD 1.6.1 on a
Quadra 700 and Redhat 7.1 on a 386?
