that's funny, I had the exact same problem than yours.
I finally ended up using unused variables, like everyone
else.
I agree with you that it's a bit ugly, but I guess
we have to live with that. (The asm syntax is not
particularly sexy either.)
By the way I suspect the compiler to do some funky
optimizations afterwards so apart from ugliness I
doubt we lose something.
