changing optimization pass heuristic in the GCC

Hi all:

I am using the SIMPLESCALAR framework for my research. It uses
gcc-2.7.2.3. Optimization passes in the gcc are applied in a sequence
using some pre-defined heuristic. I want to change this heuristic. Can
any one guide me where to start , which file in the gcc has the
function that controls the heuristic?
