If you're asking for help specific to Debian, why not use one of the
Debian help forum sites? There seemed to be plenty of activity with gcc
3.4 support in Debian up to a year ago.
In theory, you could grab a standard gnu tarball of gcc from one of the
mirror sites. There is plenty of advice at gcc.gnu.org. If you aren't
running 64-bit Debian, with its non-standard directory structure, standard
procedures ought to work.
Any install directory which isn't occupied by a prior gcc installation
ought to be fine.
I don't understand how commercial software could depend on g77, which
hasn't been supported for 6 years, and isn't distributed with the distros
required by hardware platforms introduced over the last year.
