Ref: Field is Linux GCC, bootstrapping from source. Hi, you'll find my details at http://www.JoeGarvey.com I'm a 4th year mature student at Cork University, Ireland. My project is to build a new front-end to gcc on Linux which requires a bootstrapping of gcc. I've downloaded and tried to build several versions of gcc, 4.3.2 which had it's own numerous errors, and when that was given up on, then 3.1.1 and, 3.1 (as referenced by Arthur Griffith in his book GCC: The Complete Reference) but I get the problem "read-rtl.c:662:error: lvalue required as increment operand". The academic year is progressing (50%+!), and my project is not. Do you know of a sure-fix version which WILL bootstrap? I would even consider bringing my netbook over to you there, what would you charge to effect an (gcc source bootstrap) installation you KNOW will work...? ( don't care if it's 1.0!) as long as I can... ...configure --enable-languages=c,demo,project ...'c' will be my compiler when it's installed, 'demo' is a front end paradigm which I received from India which I will use as a compass, and 'project' is the language frontend I must develop. That phase (?configure?)has never been a problem. Its when I call 'make' that I run into the error message. Maybe you already have trusted sources that compiled historically. I don't care what version. If you don't have the codes or are certain you can't get them, but know of someone who actually HAS installed a full bootstrap of gcc, even just the C compiler, if necessary, I'd gladly redirect my travel plan to get somewhere to resolve the problem. My email Joe@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx is monitored at least twice a day. To avert any delay, you prefer, you can call me after 3pm GMT at +353 87 962 5110 If necessary I'd go to the antipode, this week, to get this gcc through 'make' up installed and running. Or must I work through every gcc source version until maybe there isn't one which will bootstrap? Yours truly, Joe Garvey, Cork City, Ireland.
