trying to compile vlc with gcc

hi.
i have been trying to compile vlc but my OS (CentOS) doesn't recognize it
through konsole.
i have d/l it extracted it to /home/jQKuDGtE/gcc-4.3.2 and modified my
.bashrc file to 
export PATH=$PATH:"/home/jQKuDGtE/gcc-4.3.2/":$PATH
but i still get an error message (below) 
[jQKuDGtE@nx gcc-4.3.2]$ ./configure
checking build system type... x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu
checking host system type... x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu
checking target system type... x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu
checking for a BSD-compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c
checking whether ln works... yes
checking whether ln -s works... yes
checking for gcc... no
checking for cc... no
checking for cc... no
checking for cl... no
configure: error: no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH
See `config.log' for more details.

any help is appreciated
