Oh, I agree totally.  I think the idea of using an old gcc "for
stability" with a new gcj in order to get a more stable compiler is
Just Plain Wrong, but ...

I agree that it's not technically the right thing to do but the current
system is stable as is, so I don't want to mess with the system compiler.
I will probably build the next GCC 4.3 snapshot as an extra compiler
based off something like "/opt/gcc-4.3".

I have the option of either using a GCC 4.3 snapshot or porting the
OpenJDK to MIPS and SPARC. I don't know which one takes less time
or yields better results, but I'll find out soon.
